The mining cycle encompasses the exploration, development, production and closure phases and the many activities in each stage. Mining systems research aims to optimize the efficiency, safety and environmental compliance of all activities and the transition between the interconnected phases. Researchers lead the development of novel, machine learning-based strategies for geometallurgy, mine planning, mine automation and robotics. For the sustainability of green mining practices and a circular economy, researchers envision the future of mining and develop technologies for biomining, bioremediation and value chain integration.
