Adjunct Assistant Professor
Dr. Trifu is Senior Seismologist and Director of Mining & Geotechnical Services with Engineering Seismology Group. He holds degrees in Physics, and possesses a wide expertise in theoretical and observational seismology. Through his work, he explored the scaling effects of the rupture process from large tectonic earthquakes to induced microseismicity, with modeling and analyses directed to the understanding of seismic source and its relationship with local and regional stresses. His current research activities are focused on rockbursts and mining induced seismicity, and the use of passive seismic monitoring techniques to various geotechnical applications.
The results of Dr. Trifu's studies have been published in over 60 peer-reviewed papers. He also edited 5 special volumes at Pure and Applied Geophysics and Tectonophysics on topics such as seismic source scaling, seismic hazard and risk assessment, and induced seismicity. Besides his research and administrative activities, Dr. Trifu is Associate Editor with the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, and on the editorial board of Tectonophysics. He was presented by the American Geophysical Union with the Editors' Citation for Excellence in Refereeing.
